2010 Modern Batik Art Workshop RISE UP!

Purpose

Building on the strength and talents of our youth, particularly young graffiti artists, the Rise Up! training project offers youth who want to learn how to teach Modern Batik, the opportunity of a life time. With support from Canadian artist, David Kibuuka, youth in Dorset Park and Steeles L’Amoureux priority neighbourhood of Toronto, will have access to levels 1, 2, and 3 or Modern Batik. They will also be invited to join the Modern Batik Youth Collective, mentored by David Kibuuka to expand their art and teaching.

Goals

The goal of this project is to empower youth in Dorset Park and Steeles L’Amoureux areas by giving them the skills and support they need to become leaders and educators in their own communities. Youth who complete this course will have the skill and capacity to facilitate their own Modern Batik workshops (with David’s mentoring) at level 1, 2, and 3. They will also learn the basic marketing, publishing, and printing skills they need to market and sell their own work. Through this unique process youth have the opportunity to become educators in their community, and even earn an income.

Program

Rise Up! will offer students the opportunity to participate in a six week training for youth ages 16-24.
• Workshops will be held every Saturday beginning May 29th
• Graduates of the training project who are interested in teaching or marketing their work on a on-going basis will continue with David on level 3 of Modern Batik (July Workshops)
